16They brought the Sacred Chest to Gibeon and put it inside the Sacred Tent that David had told his workers to set up. Then they brought offerings to be completely burned on the altar and offerings to enable them to maintain fellowship with God.^{Verse 2}When David had finished presenting all those offerings, he asked Yahweh to bless the people.^{Verse 3}He gave a loaf of bread, some dates, and some raisins to every Israeli man and woman who was there.^{Verse 4}Then David appointed some of the descendants of Levi to stand in front of the Sacred Tent in which the Sacred Chest had been placed, to lead the people who worshiped and thanked and praised Yahweh, the God of the Israeli people.^{Verse 5}Asaph, who played the cymbals, was their leader. Zechariah was his assistant. The other descendants of Levi who helped Asaph were Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel. They played lyres and harps.^{Verse 6}Benaiah and Jahaziel were priests who blew trumpets frequently in front of the Sacred Tent in which was the Sacred Chest.

David’s song of praise

^{Verse 7}On that day, David gave to Asaph and his helpers this psalm to praise Yahweh:^{Verse 8}Thank God, and pray to him [MTY].Tell the people of all nations what he has done.^{Verse 9}Sing to him; sing songs to praise him.Tell about all his miraculous deeds.^{Verse 10}Be glad that you belong to him [MTY];those who want to know Yahweh better should rejoice.^{Verse 11}Trust in Yahweh and in his power;continually seek to get help from him.^{Verse 12}Do not forget the wonderful things that he has done,the miracles and the just laws that he has given to us.^{Verse 13}We people are the descendants of his servant Jacob;we are the people of Israel whom he has chosen.

^{Verse 14}Yahweh is our God.His just/fair laws are known by people throughout the world.^{Verse 15}He never forgets the agreement that he has made:he made a promise that will last for 1,000 generations.^{Verse 16}That is the agreement that he made with Abraham,and he repeated that agreement to Isaac.^{Verse 17}It was an agreement for the Israeli people,and he wanted that agreement to endure forever.^{Verse 18}What he said was, “I will give the Canaan region to you,to belong to you and your descendants forever.”

^{Verse 19}He said that to them when there were only a few of them,a tiny group of people who were living in that land ◄like strangers/that belonged to other people►;^{Verse 20}they continued to wander from one place to another,from one kingdom to another.^{Verse 21}But he did not allow others to oppress them,and he warned kings by saying to them,^{Verse 22}“Do not harm the people whom I have chosen!Do not harm my prophets!”

^{Verse 23}You people throughout the world, sing to Yahweh.Every day proclaim to others that he has saved us.^{Verse 24}Tell the people of the nations that he is great;tell all the people-groups the marvelous things that he has done.^{Verse 25}Yahweh is great, and he deserves to be praised very much.He should be revered more than all the gods,^{Verse 26}because all the gods that the other people-groups worship are only idols,but Yahweh is truly great; he created the skies.^{Verse 27}He is glorious and majestic;his power and joy fill his Sacred Tent.

^{Verse 28}You people in nations all over the world, praise Yahweh!Praise Yahweh for his glorious power [HEN]!
^{Verse 29}Praise Yahweh like he [MTY] deserves to be praised.Bring an offering and come to his Sacred Tent.Worship Yahweh because he is holy.^{Verse 30}Everyone on the earth should tremble in front of Yahweh.He put the earth firmly in its place; and nothing ever will be able to move/shake it.^{Verse 31}Everything in the sky and on the earth should be happy.People everywhere should say, “Yahweh is our king!”^{Verse 32}The oceans and all the creatures that are in the oceans should shout to praise him;the fields and everything that is in them should rejoice.^{Verse 33}When they do that, it will be as though the trees in the forest will sing joyfully in front of Yahweh.That will happen when he comes to judge everyone on [MTY] the earth.

^{Verse 34}Thank Yahweh, because everything that he does is good.He faithfully loves us forever.^{Verse 35}Say to him, “God, you are the one who rescues us,so gather us together and save us from the armies of other nations.When you do that, we will thank you [MTY],and we will be happy to praise you.”^{Verse 36}Praise Yahweh, the God of us Israeli people,He has always existed, and he will exist forever.After the people finished singing that song, they all said, “◄Amen/May it be so►!”, and they praised Yahweh.

Worship at Jerusalem and Gibeon

^{Verse 37}Then David left Asaph and the other members of his clan there in front of the tent in which Yahweh’s Sacred Chest had been placed. He told them that they must do their work there every day.^{Verse 38}David also left Obed-Edom and 68 other descendants of Levi to work with them. Hosah and Obed-Edom guarded the entrances of the Sacred Tent.^{Verse 39}David also told Zadok the Supreme Priest and the other priests who worked with him to remain in front of Yahweh’s Sacred Tent, which was still at the place where the Israeli people worshiped God there in Gibeon city.^{Verse 40}Every morning and every evening they burned offerings on the altar, obeying the rules/laws that had been written by Moses, rules/laws which Yahweh had given to the Israeli people.^{Verse 41}With them were Heman and Jeduthun and other descendants of Levi. They [MTY] were chosen to sing songs to praise Yahweh because he faithfully loves his people forever.^{Verse 42}Heman and Jeduthun were appointed to play the trumpets and cymbals when the other descendants of Levi sang sacred songs. The sons of Jeduthun were appointed to guard the gates of the Sacred Tent.^{Verse 43}Then all the people left. They returned to their homes, and David returned home to ask Yahweh to bless his family.

Introduction

INTRODUCTION TO 1 CHRONICLES 16

This chapter relates that David offered sacrifices when the ark was brought into his city, Ch1 16:1 who were the singers he appointed to sing before it continually, Ch1 16:4 and the song he that day composed and delivered to them to sing, Ch1 16:7 and that he appointed not only proper persons to minister before the ark, but also before the tabernacle at Gibeon, Ch1 16:37.

So they brought the ark of God,.... What is contained in these three verses is the same with Sa2 6:17, see the notes there. See Gill on Sa2 6:17. See Gill on Sa2 6:18. By singing the praises of God: and to record; or bring to remembrance; to commemorate in a song the great and good things God had done for Israel as a people: and to thank and praise the Lord God of Israel; for all his benefits, and the blessings of his goodness bestowed on them.

Asaph the chief,.... Of those that were now appointed: otherwise, of the three principal singers, Heman was the chief, and Asaph next, Ch1 6:33. and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, with psalteries, and with harps; to play upon them before the ark at the same time the psalms and songs were vocally sung; the above persons are such as are named before, Ch1 15:18, but Asaph made a sound with cymbals; he struck and played upon them, see Ch1 15:19.

Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests,.... These were appointed to blow with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; morning and evening.

Then on that day,.... The ark was brought to Zion, and the above persons appointed to minister before it: David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord into the hand of Asaph and his brethren to be sung by them now, and on every proper occasion; and this seems to be the first that was delivered to them; afterwards there were many more, as the titles of the psalms show; the following is composed of part of two others, as they now stand in the book of Psalms. From hence, to the end of Ch1 16:22 is the same with Psa 105:1, with a little variation, see the notes there; and from thence to the end of Ch1 16:33 is Psa 96:1 which see; and Ch1 16:34 is the same with Psa 106:1, see the notes there. And say ye, save us, O God of our salvation,.... The author of temporal, spiritual, and eternal salvation; the words are a direction to the singers, and those that sung with them, to express the prayer and doxology in the next verse, which both are the same with Psa 106:47. Whom he, that is, David, had appointed for the service of it: to minister before the ark continually; in singing the praises of God: as every day's work required; at the time of the morning and evening sacrifice, as Jarchi and Kimchi interpret it.

The Levites, the brethren of Asaph and Obededom, these were left before the ark to minister there: Obededom also the son of Jeduthun; or Ethan, which some take to be another Obededom; but the "vau" may be explanative, "even Obededom": and Hosah to be porters; these he left to be doorkeepers of the ark.

And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests,.... These he left, having appointed them to be before the tabernacle of the Lord, in the high place that was at Gibeon; namely, the tabernacle of Moses, which was removed from Nob thither in the days of Saul, and continued there to the times of Solomon, Ch1 21:28.

To offer burnt offerings unto the Lord,.... Which was the work of the priests only to do: upon the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening; the lambs of the daily sacrifice, which were a burnt offering, and only to be offered on the brasen altar at the tabernacle: and to do according to all that is written in the law of the Lord, which he commanded Israel; with regard to them, and all other sacrifices, see Exo 29:38.

And with them,.... That is, with Zadok, and the priests with him at Gibeon: he left Heman and Jeduthun: or Ethan, two principal singers: and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name; see Ch1 16:18. to give thanks to the Lord, because his mercy endureth for ever; to praise him for his benefits, flowing from his grace and mercy continually.

And with them Heman and Jeduthun, with trumpets and cymbals,.... Or with them were the trumpets and cymbals, as Kimchi; or, as Piscator supplies it, with them he "left" the trumpets and cymbals: for those that should make a sound; by striking upon them: and with musical instruments of God; sacred ones, such as were devoted to his service, as psalteries and harps; the Syriac and Arabic versions carry the sense of the words quite differently, that these men did not sing with those musical instruments, but with a pleasant voice, and with pure and acceptable prayers, in humility and uprightness, glorified God: and the sons of Jeduthun were porters; at the tabernacle in Gibeon.

And all the people departed, every man to his house,.... Having accompanied the ark to its place, and having praised the Lord for it, and been refreshed with food, see Sa2 6:19. and David returned to bless his house; his family; the Targum is,"to bless the people;''see Sa2 6:20.
