LIEUTEN'ANTS, the general name of the satraps or viceroy's of the provinces of the Persian empire, Ezr 8:36; called princes in Dan 3:2; Gen 6:1, etc. LIFE is used in Scripture both in a natural and in a spiritual sense. In the former it means physical life as opposed to death. Gen 2:7; Deut 25:7; Luke 16:25; Acts 17:25; and hence the expressions "tree of life," Gen 2:9; Gen 3:22; Rev 2:7; Rev 22:2; "bread of life," John 6:35, Jer 25:51; "water of life," Rev 22:1, 2 Sam 21:17, etc. In the latter it means moral conduct as opposed to mere animalism, and hence the identification of life with that which is good, Deut 30:15; John 3:16; John 5:24; Rom 5:12, etc., and of death with that which is evil. Jer 21:8; John 6:50; Rom 1:32.
